James took two weeks off of work and the three of us drove down to visit our family and friends in California. Here are the highlights of our trip. I just wish we had taken more pictures!
We left home at 4:30 a.m. and drove for 19 1/2 hours straight through to the LA area, arriving at the Tilson's house just before midnight. Gibson was wonderful, he slept a lot and wasn't cranky.
Spent the day with the Winn's. We celebrated James' birthday early because it was the only night when all his siblings could get together. We had a dinner of ribs and strawberry shortcake. We practically gorged ourselves on big, beautiful, red, California strawberries. Yum!
We learned two new addicting games, Puerto Rico and Carcassonne, and perfected our skills at Settlers of Catan. Fortunately, we received Carcassonne as a birthday gift so now we can play it at home. If you're invited over for dinner, you'll probably be playing one of those games with us.
Me, Gibson and Amber
Zack put his paw on Gibson's foot as if to say to the "thing" on Anne's lap, "That's my person, and don't you forget it."

James and I had Gibson dedicated at the same church that we were married in (but not by the same pastor). We wanted our parents to be there and we knew that it would be a while until they were all in Oregon at the same time. Pastor Tom Hocking did the dedication, and surprised us with showing a video of Kirk Gibson (see here). We promised to teach Gibson about God, lead him to salvation at the earliest possible age, and to remain commited to our marriage. After the church service, there was an open house at the Winn's and we were able to visit with friends and family.

We left southern CA for home. We stopped at a relative's house in the Bay Area for the night and visited with James' cousins. We were able to meet all their kids and had a great time.
We took a 3 hour drive to the Grass Valley area to visit with Tom & Carolanne Gillett, long time friends of mine. We met their 14 month old daughter, Lilianna, for the first time. Of course, we had to teach them Carcassonne. Sounds like they were hooked. Tom bought the game the next day!
The drive from Grass Valley to Portland is about a 10 hour drive. We actually made pretty good time and got home in just under 11 hours. Gibson did great until we hit Salem, then he had a meltdown and we all were miserable for the rest of the 30 minute drive. Once we got him home and fed, he was happy, and, for the first time, slept from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning. I guess he was happy to be home!
Here are some random pictures of our time in CA:

Sound asleep, it had been a LONG day.

Grandma Bev was showing him what a piggy says.

So wonderful to have the Winn family visit. So sad to have them leave again. We must all get together more often!
