We took our first family hike on April 27, 2007, to Sauvie Island. Sauvie Island is the largest island in the Columbia River; it is 4 miles wide and 15 miles long. It sits where the Willamette and Columbia Rivers meet and is so large it has its own islands. We went for a 3 mile hike on Oak Island. 
Just before we stopped for lunch, we saw a bald eagle (the national bird of the US) fly past us and land in a nearby oak tree. He was keeping a careful eye on us. We think that he was looking to Gibson for some lunch!
We stopped for lunch along Sturgeon Lake. We kept seeing fish jump out of the water, no doubt eating all the pesky flys that were bugging us.
