At the end of James' vacation we took a hike to the Natural Bridge which is near the Red River Gorge (another time we'll head there). It was about a two mile round trip hike. The colors were beautiful, though the day was a bit chilly.
One of the first things we saw were these interesting fungi on a log.
The trail was not very steep going up, but there were many places where there were stairs. Sometimes they were stone, and sometimes logs. The trail was less steep than the hike up to Multnomah Falls, but it was longer.
It is a little difficult to see in this picture, but the red dirt in the middle was fascinating.

After a long time with three little hikers, we finally made it to the Natural Bridge. We stopped to have lunch and then took the climb to the top.
Look carefully at the side of the Natural Bridge and you can see the path cut through the rock to get to the top. There was a gap that was about two feet wide and about 50 feet long. My backpack hit both sides of the rock as I walked through. Just a little claustrophobic feeling!
Once on top, I think we all were a little freaked out at how it was just a sheer drop from either side of the bridge. It was plenty wide enough, about 20 feet, but I had a death grip on the little hands I was holding!
The colors were gorgeous!
There was a ridge that we could have hiked to, had we cared to hike an additional two miles.
Well, three out of four people looking at the camera is pretty good, right?
Yeah, that's our family!
When we got back down to the bottom of the arch, Gibson found this little cave and James thought it would be fun to get pictures of the kids in it.
James captured some good pictures of Gibson which is rare, so I couldn't resist posting them all.
